The over 1.2 million members of the National Association of REALTORS® - most of whom are self-employed - support S. 1955, Small Business Health Plan legislation, which would allow trade associations to offer an affordable, uniform health insurance program to association members, regardless of where a member resides.
In 2006, 28% of our REALTOR® members - over 1 in 4 - have no health insurance from any source. This percentage is double the figure sited in a 1996 membership survey.
An additional 5% of REALTORS® have only COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) coverage which provides coverage typically for only 19 months. If those with COBRA coverage are unable to find new coverage, 1 in 3 REALTORS® could be uninsured.
